Helping Hands

Nedrim Toprak fled Turkey after the coup in 2016. This is his story in his own words:

"My name is Mahmut Nedim Toprak. I am 43 years old. I was born in Turkey. I am married with 2 daughters and 2 sons. I had been in textile business since 2000. There was an unfortunate coup attempt in Turkey on July 15, 2016. Recep Tayyip Erdogan, President of Turkey, blamed the coup attempt on a social movement, Gulen Movement, and as a result, anybody who had the slightest interaction with the movement has been since deemed as terrorists and, ergo, enemy of the state. I went to Tanzania on July 27, 2016 out of fear for my life. Police raided my house the next day. I later learnt that I would have been detained had I been home. Three months later, I tried to bring my family to Tanzania but my wife's passport got confiscated in the airport while trying to board their plane. In the aftermath, my wife and children had a very trying period. So much so that they needed therapy but the government did even revoke their valid health insurance. In the meantime, I came to the United States on May 12, 2017 and soon after applied for asylum since I trusted the U.S. justice system. My application was accepted on November 21, 2017. I applied to reunite with my family and i was also accepted. I brought three of my children here on November 21, 2018. Since my wife's passport was confiscated by authorities earlier, my wife and my youngest daughter first escaped to Rhodes Island, Greece with a smuggling boat. Using their family reunification documents, they were able to fly here from Athens, Greece shortly after."
